Echar a perder 2011

Carpet of 15,000 used books from the Ministry of Public Education. Latitude 19 Art Festival

Mexico placed last in the educational level among the 30 OECD countries in 2007. 50% of the country is considered illiterate.

On November 7, 2011 the installation was performed on the Esplanade of Xochimilco, forming a large rug with 15,000 elementary textbooks that had been used by the Ministry of Education and were recovered from schoolchildren in the states of Guanajuato and Mexico City.

Textbooks were laid as a mosaic on the floor. The public was free to walk on the books as if walking on a carpet, “treading on education.” The citizens of Xochimilco took books for browsing and made the place a traveling library for a few hours. The public took books by necessity and by choice, the installation disappeared at sunset.
